Mountain Biking Holiday Near Betws-y-Coed: Antur Stiniog and the Trails on Our Doorstep
Planning a mountain biking holiday near Betws-y-Coed? You don’t need to fly to the Alps for proper gravity riding. In fact, Eryri, also known as Snowdonia, has some of the best trail centres in the UK. Antur Stiniog sits near the top of that list, just down the road in Blaenau Ffestiniog. Bryn Bella makes a natural base for it. We’re close enough for an easy day trip. Afterwards, we know exactly what a biker needs after a day of rocky descents.
Antur Stiniog: uplift biking on your doorstep
Antur Stiniog is a not-for-profit social enterprise, founded in 2007 in the hills above Blaenau Ffestiniog. The centre runs 14 gravity-fed trails, ranging from beginner blue routes to genuinely heart-pounding blacks. As a result, riders of every ability find something to test them. Its uplift service carries riders back to the top again and again. Indeed, a full day can mean up to 20 runs, far more than most UK centres manage. For the full trail breakdown, visit Antur Stiniog’s own site.
Coaching and facilities for every rider
New to downhill riding, or keen to sharpen your technique? Antur Stiniog’s official coaching partner, Pedal MTB Ltd, runs beginner and intermediate classes on site. These cover everything from bike set up to building confidence on steeper ground. You don’t even need to own a downhill bike. Instead, the centre hires out Saracen Myst bikes built for exactly this terrain. Afterwards, riders can hose down muddy kit at the bike wash and shower off. They can then refuel at the on-site cafe, Burrito Blasus. Meanwhile, the on-site bike shop handles any running repairs.
More trails within easy reach
First, the Marin Trail winds through the Gwydir Forest, directly behind Betws-y-Coed. It’s a red-graded route of around 15 miles, with big climbs, big descents and genuinely excellent singletrack through the forest. Alternatively, south of the village, Penmachno offers a gentler option. Local community group Menter Bro Machno looks after the trails here. They split into two loops: the flowing 11 km Dolen Eryri, and the faster, more technical 19 km Dolen Machno. Overall, both sit roughly six miles from Bryn Bella.
