Things to Do in Snowdonia: Your Adventure Begins at Bryn Bella

Snowdonia is far more than one mountain, one railway and a scattering of Welsh towns. Eryri, as the national park is known in Welsh, packs in enough adventure for families, couples and solo travellers alike. So what are the best things to do in Snowdonia? Here are four experiences worth building a trip around, all within easy reach of Bryn Bella Guest House in Betws-y-Coed.

Climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon)

Let’s start with the obvious choice. Climbing Yr Wyddfa, known in English as Snowdon, sits near the top of most visitors’ Welsh bucket lists. At 1,085 metres, it is nowhere near as daunting as Everest’s 8,849 metres. However, the climb still demands respect. Good boots, proper planning and, ideally, an experienced companion all matter, because conditions on the mountain can change quickly.

Six main paths lead to the summit. The Llanberis Path is the longest and gentlest, running alongside the Snowdon Mountain Railway for most of its length. The Miners’ Track and Pyg Track both pass Llyn Glaslyn and Llyn Llydaw. Our photograph above shows both lakes from higher up the mountain, caught at sunrise. Experienced scramblers often extend the route into the Snowdon Horseshoe. This serious ridge walk crosses Crib Goch and goes well beyond the six standard paths. Reach the top, though, and the view earns every step. On a clear morning, you can see across Eryri to the sea.

After a day on the mountain, you’ll want a good night’s sleep. A hearty breakfast at Bryn Bella sets you up for whatever comes next.

Bounce Below at Zip World Llechwedd

Buried inside the Llechwedd slate mine near Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bounce Below turns a Victorian cavern into a vast underground playground. Six netted chambers, four slides and a giant spiral walkway fill a space twice the size of St Paul’s Cathedral. The temperature stays a steady 6 to 8 degrees year round, so weather never gets in the way. Children and adults bounce, climb and slide through the nets together. The whole session runs for up to an hour. It’s just one of several rides covered in our guide to Zip World days out from Betws-y-Coed, if you want to see the full range.

White Water Rafting on the Tryweryn

Snowdonia’s rivers can be just as thrilling as its mountains. At the National White Water Centre near Bala, controlled releases from the reservoir above keep the River Tryweryn running fast. The result is class 3 to 4 rapids, even in summer when other rivers run dry. Trained guides lead each raft down the course, so the ride stays fast and exhilarating without losing its safety margin. It suits confident older children and adults rather than young families. Even so, anyone who takes it on gets a genuinely thrilling half day out.

By the time you’re back at Bryn Bella that evening, a warm bed and a quiet night will feel earned. Tomorrow, you might fancy something gentler.

A Round at Royal St David’s

Snowdonia rewards walkers, but it rewards golfers too. Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech ranks among Britain’s finest links courses. Its setting is hard to beat. The par 69 course runs to 6,263 yards. Harlech Castle rises on one side, with Cardigan Bay stretching out on the other. Snowdonia’s peaks fill the skyline throughout, so don’t be surprised if your concentration wanders mid swing.
